They do have some flaws however, which hinder them from being our top option. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't include AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in shoes and socks and can't navigate tightly packed rooms very well in our tests. It also doesn't have a camera that would let it see the corners of a room.

Still, it's very good to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on a iRobot Roomba and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. Additionally, it's quiet and can work while you're at work or going to school. The only thing it lacks that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective at mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't adhere well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does come with a self-emptying dock, though. If you're in need of it mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

2. iRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can also sweep floors. Its quick navigation and smart cleaning maps make it simple to clean and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with a self-emptying bin, powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, though it lags behind some competitors in deep cleaning.

3. Roomba X40 from iRobot

This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular design that appears more like the regular Roomba unit than the boxy units of the rivals. It's among our most attractive robot vacuum cleaner vacuums. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company’s robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's the only robotic vacuum/mop to score 100% in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured light system and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully self-refill and empty its base station, and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface, and it is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only drawback is that it's loud that could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or in the evening as you try to fall asleep.

It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as pricey as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and look better. If you're willing with a bit more noise and some additional cost this is a capable two-in-one that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the line robot vacuum and mop. It has a number of features that are advanced and will help you forget your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empties the vacuum's dust bin, fills its water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot employs a combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than its more expensive rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection however this was not completely foolproof in our tests, and was sometimes confused with power cords or obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction maximum of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to get the job done. It also features "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the amount of time the vacuum works and alters the frequency of cleaning for different areas of the home in accordance with the degree of dirt they tend to be.

It's self-sufficient too, with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to make cleaning schedules, arrange a spot clean or to sort out your rooms with the most dirt to ensure better performance. The app also gives access to many features like seasonal suggestions, custom maps, and advanced settings for your cleaning.
