How to Replace an audi car key replacement cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Peugeot-2021-New-Black.pngCharles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends a signal to ECU pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins replacement key for audi a3 the connector and they serve different purposes however the best method to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline jump out but the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. Please let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is identical to the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a junkyard or at a parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you have a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger an engine shutdown.

The signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox and gears that shift faster than normal and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and needs replacing. They're inexpensive and easy to locate particularly in the case of a Bosch model like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues in your vehicle. It is an important part of the transmission in your replacement audi a4 key, as it transmits information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it could cause problems for the transmission as well as the rest of the car's components.

key-from-new-car-2021-08-29-05-15-15-utc-min-scaled.jpgThe G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the flow of fuel and boost and also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should detect a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these two points. This is a common feature across the audi car key replacement cost 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find good ones in wrecking yards.
